How do I qualify for the exam?

Professional certification is the voluntary process by which a non-governmental agency grants time-limited recognition and use of a credential to individuals who have met predetermined and standardized criteria. Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) indicates that individual practitioners have met the standards necessary to provide competent genetic counseling services.

Eligibility for the certification exam is determined by gaining Active Candidate Status (ACS). Currently, ACS is awarded when a candidate applies, meets specific criteria and provides all requested supporting documentation. A graduate of an ABGC accredited training program may apply for Active Candidate Status at any time after the current examination information is posted.
