ABGC must formally recognize domestic and international bodies that are reviewing and approving/accrediting master’s degree genetic counseling programs. The accrediting body recognition process allows ABGC to open a pathway for internationally trained genetic counselors to qualify to sit for the examination.
Organizations wishing to apply must demonstrate compliance with Criteria for ABGC Recognized Accrediting Bodies, which includes criteria in six categories:
- Ensuring quality education
- Demonstrating accountability
- Promoting continual improvement and quality
- Employing fair procedures in decision-making
- Continuing to reassess accreditation practices
- Demonstrating sustainability
Accreditation bodies should be reviewing programs within their own regional jurisdictions.
Once the accrediting body has been recognized, individuals registered or certified with those bodies may apply to sit for the ABGC Certified Genetic Counselor examination. Individual applicants for the CGC examination will have to document registration/certification with the recognized body. Individuals whose education was not conducted in English will need to submit a TOEFL score. Please see the ABGC Examination Bulletin for further information.
