5 Tips for Beating Procrastination When Studying for the ABGC Certification Examination

As you study for the ABGC Certification Examination on your way to achieving the Certified Genetic Counselor credential, you may find yourself navigating procrastination. Here are a few of my suggestions for beating procrastination and developing a solid study schedule.

1. Start Small and Gradually Build Your Study Habit

Begin with short study sessions, even just five minutes, each day. These quick sessions can include preparing and organizing study materials. If you feel inclined to continue studying beyond this timeframe, do so; otherwise, feel free to stop for the day. From there, gradually extend the duration of your study sessions. Often, the most challenging part is beginning, and this method helps ease you into the habit of studying without overwhelming you.

2. Be Kind to Yourself

Procrastination is frequently driven by fear, anxiety, or other emotional factors. It is perfectly acceptable if your study sessions do not always feel fully focused or productive. Any amount of studying is better than none. Many students discover that even seemingly "unfocused" sessions result in more retention and learning than anticipated.

3. Utilize the Pomodoro Technique

This time management strategy involves 20 minutes of focused work followed by a five-minute break. It can make daunting tasks more manageable by breaking them into smaller, more attainable segments. The goal is to concentrate on your best effort within these short intervals rather than the task's completion.

4. Engage a Body Double or Accountability Partner

Working alongside another person, even if they are not performing the same task, can help maintain motivation and accountability. This technique, known as body doubling, can reduce feelings of isolation and increase focus. Your partner can also provide periodic check-ins to keep you on track.

5. Create a Schedule and Reward Yourself for Adherence

Develop a study schedule and find personal incentives to stick to it. Rewards could range from small treats, like fruit, to simply checking off completed study sessions on a list. Associating studying with positive outcomes can enhance motivation and make the process more enjoyable.

By incorporating these strategies, you can effectively manage procrastination and develop a consistent study routine as you study for the ABGC board exam.
